Culture of Greenland

Culture of Greenland presents a great influence of the Inuit traditions. A majority of the people of Greenland are Inuit descendants. Ice-fishing and annual dog-sled races are popular among the residents of Greenland. The people of Greenland are peace loving and hospitable.

The tiny population of Greenland shows that around 80% of the populations are Inuits and the rest are primarily Danish. The East Greenlanders have own Inuit dialect and maintain unique Inuit traditions. The primary occupation of the Inuits are fishing and hunting. They also use the traditional kayak for that. The Inuits are known for their family values, warm hospitality and peace loving nature.

The traditional culture of Greenland reveals that hunting was the most important part of the people of Greenland. Still now, most of the people of Greenland hunt though on a part-time basis, to supplement their diet. Hunting also provides them skin for clothing and kayaks.

Though Geenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it has been enjoying home rule since 1979.

In the south Greenland you can witness the ruins of Viking settlements. The ruins of the First Christian Church are well preserved. The larger towns of Greenland exhibit the signs of ancient culture

The old drum dance is definitely a part of the culture of Greenland. A good number of artists perform the old drum dance. The historical myths and sagas are the source of modern music and theatre of today.

The ancient myths are also expressed in the form of arts and crafts of Greenland. The tupilaks, the small grotesque figures carved in narwhal or reindeer antler or walrus tooth, all represent the evil spirits of ancient myths. These are now widely appreciated as souvenirs and each of these tupilaks carved out by the skilled artists excel in unique character.

The dog racing, ice fishing, hiking and cross-country racing is an integral part of the culture of Greenland.
