Geography of Belize

Belize lying 88º west of the Prime Meridian and 17º north of Equator, is a small state in in Central America. The geography of Belize is worth the interest of several geologists. The state of Belize is bordered by Gautemala in the south-west and Mexico in the north-west. The geography of Belize is marked by distinct natural beauty.

Climate
The geography of Belize is marked by tropical climate. The summer, winter and monsoon seasons are distinctly marked in Belize. However the coastal areas are marked by maritime climate with not much seasonal changes. The hilly areas have cooler weather conditions. The average amount of rainfall varies from 4500 mm in the south to 1350 mm in the north. Belize is experiences frequent hurricanes. In fact, hurricanes are regarded as symbols of destruction and devastation in Belize.

Physical Feature
Belize is basically a swampy area covered by tropical forests, most of which has been cleared for habitation and cultivation. There are 18 important rivers in Belize. The entire area is criss crossed by perennial streams, lagoons, rivers and grasslands.

Geology
The geology forms as important part of the geography of Belize. Apart from the Maya mountains, most of Belize consists of granite, limestone and Paleozoic sediments. Belize is known for its fertile soil and this is the reason why agriculture is an important source of income in Belize.

Natural Resources
Belize has large amount of mineral deposits. Some of the minerals found in this area include bauxite, dolomite, cassite, barite and tin. However none of the minerals are available in large quantities to encourage mining. Limestone is the only abundant resource available in Belize. Hence, limestone is not only used for domestic purposes but is also exported. However, Belize is noted for its hydroelectricity production.

Lack of proper governmental attention has led to several geographical hazards. Deforestation, agricultural runoff, water pollution and soil erosion are some of the important environmental issues that plague the region.
